While it is no secret that being involved in a traffic stop can be stressful and intimidating, attempting to evade authorities may never be the soundest decision. A similar act may only cause authorities to be more suspicious of the presence of unlawful activity and it may even increase the severity of the charges against a person. A 20-year-old man in North Carolina is facing DWI charges after allegedly attempting to avoid a DWI checkpoint and leading authorities on a brief pursuit.

Reports of a pursuit

Authorities say that the incident began on a recent Saturday as they were conducting safety checks at a DWI checkpoint. They claim to have spotted a driver attempting to turn around and avoid the area, which allegedly prompted a brief pursuit. The car reportedly crashed soon thereafter and while all the occupants allegedly attempted to flee the scene on foot, authorities say that all four were eventually located and placed under arrest.

No further information was provided as to how authorities determined the presence of impairment. However, the driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while impaired and is currently facing numerous charges in relation to the alleged incident. Those who face similar charges might not always understand their legal rights and options and they may be left in search of advice on how best to navigate the subsequent process.

Navigating the process

Those who face DWI charges under similar scenarios and have questions about what to expect from the process could benefit from retaining the services of an attorney as soon as possible. An attorney can evaluate the charges and evidence against a client, provide insight on all his or her available options,  and assist in creating a strong defense for what comes next. If a conviction cannot be avoided, an attorney can help a client create a strategy with which to seek a lesser sentence during subsequent court proceedings.
